Three details that expose a weak Datejust

Start with the date. On the original, the numeral is centred in the window and the cyclops magnifies it to about two and a half times, filling the lens edge to edge. A poor clone leaves the digit sitting low, or fits a lens with too little magnification so the date floats in empty space. Second, the fluted bezel: the flutes should be cut rather than stamped, each valley reaching the same depth, the ridge line staying crisp where it meets the crystal. Third, the Jubilee bracelet — five links per row, the three centre links polished and slightly domed, articulating smoothly enough that the bracelet drapes rather than hangs.

We check all three on arrival, which is why the 164 references here are fewer than what our suppliers offer.

Choosing across the range

Every reference here is $1,149, so the choice comes down to dial and bracelet work. The 126231 is the steel and rose two-tone; diamond-set dials and bezels appear on the 126333 and the yellow gold 278273. Any two-tone build asks an extra question of the maker: the gold tone on the centre links must match the bezel exactly under daylight and under warm indoor light, and a mismatch there is the most common flaw we reject.

Movements are Swiss-grade clone automatics with around 48 hours of reserve, and crystals are sapphire with anti-reflective coating. Steel is 904L on the references whose originals use it, stated listing by listing rather than as a blanket claim. Water resistance is everyday, roughly 50 metres; hand-washing and rain only.
