What is mother-of-pearl and how is it used in a dial?
Mother-of-pearl (MOP) is the iridescent layer inside certain seashells, typically oyster or abalone. Thin sheets of MOP are adhered to a dial base and then printed with hour indices, numerals or date windows. The iridescence means the dial shifts colour depending on viewing angle and light source. In warm tungsten light it appears peachy; in cool daylight it reads grey-blue. No two MOP dials look exactly identical because the shell material is natural.
Does rose gold fade or change colour over time?
Rose gold does not fade but does oxidize slowly and develop a subtle patina over years of wear. Soap and water will not remove this patina; it is part of the aging process and many owners value it.
