What a Daytona chronograph is judged on

Three sub-dials, a tachymetric scale and two pushers give this model plenty of chances to look wrong. Sub-dial rings should be concentric with their printed tracks and cut to a matching depth; one shallow or off-centre register reads as incorrect before you can name why. Pusher shoulders need to be machined, and on screw-down examples the threads should engage cleanly instead of grinding. The bezel is a typography exercise as much as a machining one — the numerals thin as the scale compresses towards 400, and thick, evenly weighted digits at that end of the arc are the usual giveaway.

Forty-eight Daytona references

Every reference here is $1,449, one figure across all 48 variants, so the decision is about dial and case rather than budget. The grey-dialled 116503 is the two-tone configuration, and the join between steel and gold on the bracelet centre links is where a weak example shows itself. The 116519 puts Roman numerals on black, where uneven spacing around the sub-dial cutouts is the first thing to check. The 116506-0001 listing carries the Arabic ice treatment, judged on how evenly the stones are matched across the dial and how level they sit in their settings. The DIW NTPT Carbon Lemon Edition gets an extra pass, since the layered pattern has to run continuously across the flanks and misaligned sheets are visible at arm's length.

The plain terms
