The movement is automatic, so the seconds hand sweeps rather than ticks and the watch winds itself as you wear it. Will the platinum finish tarnish or discolour over time?
No. Platinum is chemically inert and does not tarnish or oxidise like silver or other metals. It will retain its grey-white colour indefinitely. Normal wear may develop a patina (a light surface dulling), which some collectors embrace as character.
Is this watch significantly heavier than a steel Offshore of similar size?
Yes, noticeably so. A 44mm steel Offshore weighs around 185–200 grams; a platinum equivalent weighs approximately 280–320 grams depending on bracelet style. The weight is one reason platinum watches command respect on the wrist.
Does the platinum case require special cleaning or maintenance?
Clean it as you would any watch: a soft cloth and mild soap with warm water. Platinum is harder than steel and resists scratching better, so it polishes easily if you ever want to restore shine. No special treatments needed.
Why is the 44mm size only available in platinum, not steel?
Audemars Piguet produced the 44mm Offshore primarily in precious metals (platinum, rose gold, white gold). The stainless steel version maxes out at 42mm. This is a design choice by the original manufacture.
