Two-colour bezels and the fourth hand

The GMT-Master's signature is a bezel split into day and night halves, and that split line is where clones are caught. On the ceramic references — the 116718LN and the 116710 DLC-PVD — the colour boundary is formed within the material, so it should be razor-straight and land exactly at the 6 and 18 markers. A boundary that wanders, bleeds or sits a degree off the marker is a rejection. The 16710 is from the earlier aluminium-insert generation, where colour sits on the surface rather than through it: there we check the join between the halves and look for the blotchy fading that gives a careless insert away.

Then the 24-hour hand. It is the reason the watch exists, and it must point cleanly at the bezel numerals rather than falling short or overshooting. The hour hand must also jump independently in one-hour steps when set, without dragging the minute hand along. A clone whose local hour hand cannot be moved on its own has missed the point of the reference, so we test the function rather than assume it.

The 116718LN is the yellow-gold-tone version with a black ceramic bezel — the least forgiving on finish, since gold tone shows plating thinness at the lug edges first. The 16710 is the red and black Coke configuration on an Oyster bracelet. The 116710 DLC-PVD is the blacked-out coated variant, where even coating across the bracelet links is what to inspect. Specification and everyday use

Cases use 904L steel where the reference calls for it, with sapphire crystal, anti-reflective coating and ceramic inserts on the modern references. Movements are Swiss-grade clone automatic with roughly 48 hours of power reserve; a Japanese Miyota option can be chosen on every model. Water resistance is everyday, around 50 metres — rain and washing, not swimming or diving.
