Tapisserie at the right scale

The Royal Oak dial is a grid of raised squares — the Tapisserie pattern — cut into the blank rather than stamped or printed. Audemars Piguet works it at more than one scale: Petite Tapisserie is the finer grid, Grande the broader, and the reference decides which belongs. Clone dials are often struck from one tool and dropped into whatever case is at hand, so a grid meant for a 41mm dial appears on a 37mm watch, squares too large and too few across the width. We count them against the reference rather than judging the pattern by eye.

Scale settled, the cut still has to have depth: tilt a properly machined dial and it shifts, catching light square by square, while a flat imitation stays uniformly grey through the whole arc. You will see it in your own QC images, shot under angled light.

Where the bracelet leaves the case

The Royal Oak has no lugs. The bracelet grows out of the case at a fixed angle rather than hanging from a spring bar, and that angle is the hardest part to copy. Too shallow and the bracelet stands away from the wrist, leaving a wedge of light under the first link; too steep and the links stack awkwardly. The join should be flush on both sides, with the same gap left and right.

Construction and ownership terms

Cases are steel or gold-tone depending on reference, with sapphire crystal and anti-reflective coating. Movements are Swiss-grade clone automatic with around 48 hours of power reserve; a Japanese Miyota version can be chosen on each product page. Water resistance is everyday, roughly 50 metres — rain and hand-washing fine, swimming and diving not.
